Goals/Objectives/Key Purpose of the Project
To collect and propagate distinctive works of independent filmmakers in Thailand, and to produce alternative films that are different from mainstream films.
To elaborate, many current Thai films, both short and long films, have been produced quite similarly for commercial and entertainment purpose. Meanwhile, there is still a portion of Thai filmmakers whose quality, distinctive works cannot penetrate a film industry because these films are not considered profitable compared to mainstream films. The Thai Independent Filmmakers Group has built up a network of independent filmmakers in order to support independent films to be showed at film festivals, and organized activities in Thailand to exchange knowledge and provide options for art movie audiences, including moviegoers and film producers. As a result, moviegoers will have more opportunities to see alternative movies, while film producers will have more spaces to show their works since venues for independent films are quite limited each year.
Note: currently, the Group has about 35 members and, so far, has distributed films to 63 film festivals around the world.
A summary of project description
To accumulate and distribute films, to develop a film directory, to provide information, and to be a space for free thoughts.
Apart from the fact that the Group has continued to organize activities, such as film festivals for Thai independent films, and film production workshops for amateur film producers, the Group has also developed a website, containing films, articles, and interviews that provide interesting concepts for web browsers to extend their own works. In the future, the Group will plan to develop a film directory to collect and distribute works of its members, and to organize campus tours at educational institutions, both in Bangkok and in the province, to distribute the Group’s works and exchange works with these institutions.
