ANA Travel Grant Proposal by B-Floor Theatre; Thailand

Background
B-Floor was founded in 1999 by a group of actors, directors and designers. B-Floor Theatre is one of the pioneering contemporary theatre companies in Thailand.

B-Floor's productions strive to raise social awareness by communicating the points of view of suppressed ideas and events, in new forms that are viscerally, artistically, and intellectually challenging.

B-Floor's performances are developed through improvisational "theatre labs" where the group experiments with the expressive abilities of the human body by combining contemporary dance, mime, masks, gymnastics and martial arts. B-Floor also emphasizes exploring and incorporating the elements of theatre creation- objects, lights, sound, puppets, and film- alongside body movement to create the play's narrative.

Objective
The Committee of the 2009 Seoul Fringe Festival has invited B-Floor to perform their award winning production, “GodaGardener,” at the Festival, as well as participate in artist talks. The period of invitation is from August 16 – 23, 2009. The Festival will provide accommodation, inbound transportation and Per Diem support, but the festival can not provide support for airfare.

B-Floor Theatre would like to ask the ANA Travel Bursary for funds to cover 2 round trip tickets; one from BKK-Seoul for Jarunun Phantachat (production manager), and the other from Tokyo-Seoul for Teerawat Mulvilai (performer & director).

We hope ANA Travel Bursary interest to cover 2 members of b-floor budget airfare, to be success joining that event.

1. Teerawat MulvilaiGodaGardener Performer & Director

Artistic Director and Co-Founder of B-Floor Theatre, Teerawat Mulvilai is a versatile physical performer and acclaimed director with training in diverse movement techniques such as Butoh, Top Ma Pab (Northern Thai Martial Art), Viewpoints, and modern dance. The Bangkok Post has hailed him as "One of the most politically and socially conscious directors today."

In 1996, he was invited by Kamron Gunatilaka to be an actor and member of Crescent Moon Theatre. In 1999, he co-founded B-Floor Theatre, which brought together a diverse group of theatre artists whose aim was to focus on exploring and creating physical theatre work.

His commitment to this physical work also drew him to work with Katsura Kan, a renowned Butoh dancer, in several projects including Bhagavad Gita (performed in Bangkok, Corsica, and France in 2000), Medusa- Life Without Snakes (performed at the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and 2001 Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theatre), and the Butoh Dance Project in August 2004 (performed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the 8th International Youth Theatre Festival in Croatia).

In 2006, he was an Artist in Residence at the Taipei Artists Village, where he conducted interviews with Thai migrant workers in Taiwan. Teerawat created a solo performance piece, GodaGardener, based on these experiences. In 2008, the Bangkok Theatre Network awarded GodaGardener first place in the category of "Socially Conscious Theatre." In 2010, Teerawat will return to the Taipei Artists Village to visit the migrant workers he interviewed 4 years ago to ask them, "What has changed?" The findings of his research will be presented via documentary film and the creation of a new performance.
